In Würzburg, around 430 girls and women are considered to be affected or at risk of genital mutilation; according to Terre des Femmes, there are over 20,000 in Bavaria.
The facility run by the Catholic women’s association IN VIA Würzburg has been offering low-threshold advice in several languages for over a year, supported by a peer-to-peer concept with language and cultural mediators. The counseling often deals with questions about genital mutilation in connection with asylum, child protection, health and pregnancy. Those seeking advice are also specifically referred to medical and psychosocial support services.
