Festival au Desert

Das “Festival au Desert” ist eine einzigartige Präsentation der Musik und Kultur der Tuareg der Sahara. Das abgelegenste Musikfestival der Erde begrüßt außerdem Künstler aus anderen Teilen Malis, Afrikas und der Welt. 2002 kamen anerkannte Künstler wie Ali Farka Toure (Mali), Justin Adams & Robert Plant (England) und Oumou Sangare (Mali) und trafen junge Musiker wie Adama Yalomba (Mali) und Seddoum (Mauretanien).

Das Festival unter der Schirmherrschaft des Kultusministeriums und des Ministeriums für Kunsthandwerk und Tourismus wird organisiert von den Tuareg-Organisationen Efes und Aitma in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Africa Festival (Deutschland), der Angence Intergouvernementale de la Francophonie (Frankreich), der Europäischen Kommission (Mali), der Gesellschaft für technische Zusammenarbeit/GTZ (Deutschland), Sfinks (Belgien), Triban Union (Frankreich) und Volkswagen (Deutschland).

Das jährliche „Festival au Desert“ findet seit Januar 2001 in der sandigen Weite der afrikanischen Sahara statt. Es baut auf die großen traditionellen Versammlungen der Touareg oder Tamashek, wie sie sich selbst nennen, auf. Seit Jahrhunderten bieten diese Versammlungen den nomadischen Tamashek eine unschätzbare Möglichkeit um einander zu treffen, sich auszutauschen und zu feiern.

Beim „Festival au Desert“ werden alle traditionellen Aktivitäten der alten traditionellen Tamashek-Versammlungen vertreten sein: Tamashek-Lieder, Tänze, Gedichte, Kamelrennen, Spiele usw. Es wird außerdem einen improvisierten Handwerksmarkt geben, auf dem Touareg ihren Schmuck, Lederarbeiten, mit Ornamenten verzierte Messer, Schwerter und anderes anbieten werden.

Ein weiteres Ziel des Festivals ist es, Interesse an der südlichen Sahara zu wecken – an ihren Bewohnern, ihrer Kultur, ihrer Geschichte, ihrer wirtschaftlichen und sozialen Entwicklung. Das „Festival au Desert“ wird Gelegenheit für eine Reihe von Gesprächen und Konferenzen über die Kultur der Touareg und die Entwicklung der südlichen Sahara bieten. Die Konferenzen werden jeden Morgen in Englisch und Französisch stattfinden.

Das vierte „Festival au Desert“ wird vom 9. bis zum 11. Januar in Essakane stattfinden – einer alten Oase in der südlichen Sahara, 65 km nord-westlich von Timbuktu, Mali, West Afrika.

The Festival in the Desert is a unique celebration of the music and culture of the Touareg people of the Sahara desert. The event also welcomes artists from other parts of Mali, Africa and the world to the most remote music festival on the globe. In 2002 internationaly reknowned artists like Ali Farka Toure (Mali), Justin Adams & Robert Plant (England) and Oumou Sangare (Mali) came and met young musicians like Adama Yalomba (Mali) and Seddoum (Mauretania)) .

The festival under the patronage of the Ministry of Culture in partnership with the Minstery of Artwork and Tourism is organised by the non-governmental Touareg associations Efès and Aitma, in cooperation with the Africa Festival (Germany), Agence Intergouvernementale de la Francophonie (France), the European Commission (Mali), the Gesellschaft für technische Zusammenarbeit /GTZ (Germany), Sfinks (Belgium), Triban Union (France) and Volkswagen (Germany).

The annual Festival In the Desert has been taking place deep in the sandy vastness of the African Sahara since January 2001. This festival has grafted itself onto the great traditional gatherings of the Touaregs or Tamashek people, as they call themselves. For centuries these gatherings have provided an invaluable opportunity for the nomadic Tamasheks to meet, exchange and celebrate.

The Festival In the Desert will feature all the traditional activities of the old traditional Tamashek gatherings including Tamashek songs, dances, poetry readings, camel racing, gaming etc. It will also feature an impromptu crafts market, where Touareg craftsmen will sell their jewellery, leatherwork, ornamental knives, swords and other artefacts.

The purpose of the festival is also to stimulate interest in the southern Sahara region – its people, culture, history, economic and social development. The Festival In The Desert will have a series of talks and conferences about Touareg culture and the development of the southern Sahara. The conferences will take place every morning with sessions in French and English exploring the theme of life in the desert.

The fourth edition of the Festival In The Desert will take place at Essakane, an old oasis in the southern Sahara desert 65 km north west of Timbuktu in Mali, West Africa between the 9th and the 11th of January 2004.
