Die Sängerin, Perkussionistin und Mbira-Virtuosin Chiwoniso Maraire aus Zimbabwe hatte 1999 ihre Deutschlandpremiere beim 11. Internationalen Africa Festival in Würzburg, wo sie ihre erste CD „Ancient Voices“ präsentierte. Ihr zweites Album "Timeless" spielte sie 2004 mit der Gruppe Vibe Culture ein. Beim diesjährigen Africa Festival wird sie erstmals in Europa ihre neue Band vorstellen, in der einige der bekanntesten Musiker der aktuellen Musikszene aus Zimbabwe mitwirken. Traditionelle Shona-Musik verbindet sich mit den neuen Sounds aus dem südlichen Afrika. 
The singer, percussionist, and mbira virtuoso Chiwoniso Maraire from Zimbabwe first appeared in Germany at the 11th International Africa Festival in Wuerzburg in 1999, presenting her debut CD "Ancient Voices". Her second album "Timeless" was recorded in 2004 together with the band Vibe Culture. At this year's festival, she will be introducing her new band some members of which belong to the best-known musicians of Zimbabwe's current music scene. Traditional shona music will merge with new sounds from Southern Africa.

Freshlyground ist eine Ssüdafrikanische Afro-Fusionsband, die 2002 in Kapstadt gegründet wurde. Die Bandmitglieder kommen aus Südafrika, Mozambik und Zimbabwe. Freshlyground integrieren Elemente von traditioneller südafrikanischer Musik (wie Kwela und afrikanischen Folk) mit Blues, Jazz und Indie-Rock. Die Leadsängerin ist Zolani Mahola, deren außergewöhliche Stimme zu dem einzigartigen und frischen Sound der Band beiträgt. In Südafrika haben sie viermal Platinum für ihre CD Nomvula bekommen und waren wochenlang die Nummer 1 in der Top 40. Sie bekamen 2006 den MTV Europe Musik Award als „best African act”.
Freshlyground are a South African Afro-fusion ensemble founded in Cape Town in 2002. The band members are from South Africa, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe. Freshlyground mix elements of traditional South African music (such as kwela and African folk music) with blues, jazz, and independent rock. The exceptional voice of Zolani Mahola, the lead singer, contributes much to the unique and fresh sound of Freshlyground. Their fourfold platinum-selling album "Nomvula" ranked first in the Top 40 Hits for weeks. They won the “Best African Act Award” at the 2006 MTV Europe Music Awards.
